Hi banquet manager. You are right that once the number of rooms is confirmed, any empty room need to be paid. Usually, though, the commitment date can be arranged so that the out-of-town guests would have given their responses prior to that date. I should have added, too, there should be someone, other than the bride or groom (since they would be very busy), to be in-charged to make sure that the block of rooms are fully occupied. If Murphy happens, he/she could offer the discounted rates to the hotel's other guests. Hopefully there are some guests checking in without reservations. Hope you will visit again.

You forgot to mention that when booking a block of rooms, there is usually a guarantee attached to that in order to get the discounted rate. If you don't book the full block you still need to pay for them.

I think having a wedding at home is a wonderful idea. It not only allows you to save on costs but gives your wedding an intimate feel. Opening your home to wedding guests would make them feel very special. I know I would.
